A podiatrist or chiropodist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), a physician and surgeon who specializes in treating conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg from the knee down. This specialist is also skilled in the biomechanics and dermatology of the foot and ankle. Common foot ailments that can be treated by a podiatrist are arthritis in the feet, gout, diabetic foot ulcers, peripheral arterial disease in the legs, peripheral neuropathy of the toes, ankle sprains, heel pain, Achilles’ tendinitis, bunions, hammer toes, neuromas in the foot, ingrown toenails, and toenail fungus.
Podiatrists complete 4-years of education in a podiatric medical school program followed by a 3-year surgical residency at a hospital. Many podiatrists are fellowship trained in traumatology and rear foot reconstruction and ankle surgery.
