Common foot ailments that can be treated by a podiatrist are arthritis in the feet, gout, diabetic foot ulcers, peripheral arterial disease in the legs, peripheral neuropathy of the toes, ankle sprains, heel pain, Achilles’ tendinitis, bunions, hammer toes, neuromas in the foot, ingrown toenails, and toenail fungus.
Podiatrists complete 4-years of education in a podiatric medical school program followed by a 3-year surgical residency at a hospital. Many podiatrists are fellowship trained in traumatology and rear foot reconstruction and ankle surgery.
